In the realm of water management, change has long been overdue.

For over three decades, I've been entrenched in the intricate dance of determining the effects of and negotiating methods to augment water within natural systems. From spearheading water rights projects and entitlements, to navigating Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Hydropower Licensing, and Habitat Conservation Plans, each endeavor shared a common tool: the regulatory hammer.

Inefficiencies of Regulatory Tools

This hammer, wielded in various forms such as the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Federal Power Act or the Public Trust Doctrine, served as the mechanism to provide additional water for the natural environment. Yet, despite its well-intentioned purpose, this approach has proven to be inefficient, time-consuming, and financially burdensome. Worse still, it often results in a lose-lose scenario, leaving the very ecosystems we sought to protect as casualties of bureaucratic inertia and deep conflict.

After years of grappling with the shortcomings of regulatory framework, it's evident that a paradigm shift is imperative. Enter water offset credits—an innovative solution that flips the script on traditional water management practices. At the forefront of this conversation is Verified Water, a voluntary program that offers a refreshing departure from the convoluted processes of yesteryear.

Need for a Paradigm Shift

Unlike traditional water management actions, Verified Water operates on the principle of positive incentives. Instead of relying on the blunt force of regulatory mandates, it provides a streamlined, voluntary pathway for stakeholders to contribute to the preservation of our natural water systems. By offering a quick and meaningful alternative to the lethargic status quo, Verified Water empowers entities to offset their water footprint and achieve sustainability objectives with ease.

Principles and Benefits of Verified Water

At its core, Verified Water represents more than just a program—it embodies a fundamental shift in how we approach water management. By embracing voluntary initiatives grounded in collaboration rather than coercion, we pave the way for a future where environmental stewardship and economic prosperity go hand in hand.

A Fundamental Shift in Approach

The time for change is now. While there might always be a need for regulatory hammers, it is time to embrace the era of voluntary offsets in water management.  Let us seize the opportunity to forge a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come. With Verified Water leading the way, the possibilities are boundless, and the potential for positive impact immeasurable.
