Playoff Green Replenishes 100,000 Gallons for College Football Playoff National Championship

Verified Water teamed up with Playoff Green to achieve an important environmental milestone for the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium: replenishing 100,000 gallons of precious freshwater in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River Basin.

This partnership kicked off a successful collaboration between two organizations committed to making sports events more sustainable. Through the purchase of Verified Water Credits™, Playoff Green sent a strong message about the importance of addressing the water footprint of major events by providing vital financing for regional water replenishment projects.

Supporting Georgia Agriculture, Sustaining Local Water Resources

The water replenishment project, developed in partnership with the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center, focuses on a peanut farm in the ACF River Basin implementing regenerative agriculture practices. By replacing high-pressure irrigation nozzles with low-pressure systems, the farm has drastically improved water efficiency. Cover cropping was also introduced to retain soil moisture and enhance ecosystem health.

"Georgia is doing a lot of good work on water and Georgia farmers are really at the forefront of water conservation," noted Mark Masters, Executive Director of the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center. "Our partnership with Verified Water on the Flint River Basin project has been an instrumental opportunity to highlight that good stewardship."

Making Championship Green History

The 100,000-gallon replenishment represents just part of the College Football Playoff's comprehensive sustainability efforts. According to the Playoff Green Impact Report, the 2025 championship achieved an impressive 96% waste diversion rate - making it the first-ever zero-waste College Football Playoff. These achievements demonstrate how major sporting events can lead by example in environmental responsibility.

Why Water Matters in Sports

Playoff Green's outreach and partnership with Verified Water recognizes that large sporting events use significant amounts of water - from field maintenance to fan services - and taking action to replenish water resources is essential for environmental leadership.

By offsetting a portion of their water footprint, the College Football Playoff showed how major sporting events can directly invest in local watershed health. This type of action is particularly meaningful in a state like Georgia, where agricultural water use and urban water demands must be carefully balanced.

Continuing the Partnership

The success of this collaboration between Verified Water, Playoff Green, and the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center sets a strong precedent for future sporting events. By integrating water replenishment into event planning, organizers can ensure their celebrations don't come at the expense of vital water resources.
